THC vs THCa: Same Smoke, Different Rules

At Lowell Farms, we’ve spent years perfecting the pre-roll. With our carefully curated blends, unique packaging, and tailored rolling style, our reputation has always rested on one thing: the true American cannabis experience.

Now that we have stepped into the eCommerce space, it has meant small changes on our side needed to happen so that we can bring our authentic Lowell experience to a wider audience than ever before.

That’s why our online collection of products features exclusively THCa flower.

Now, if you’re wondering how that’s any different from the THC you’ve come to expect from Lowell, here’s the honest truth: it isn’t. Not in any way that matters.

Because once you spark it, THCa converts into THC. The high, the flavor, the attitude—it’s all there. The only real difference? The law.

Let’s break it down. Two women sharing a THCa preroll on the beach

What Is THCa?

THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the non-psychoactive compound found in raw cannabis flower – it's the chemical precursor to THC. That means it converts into the same THC you know and love when heat is applied—via smoking, vaping, or baking.

Here’s the key: THCa flower and THC flower are chemically the same once activated. The only difference lies in how much Delta-9 THC is already present in the plant at the time of lab testing.

That’s what defines the legal line between hemp and marijuana.

Both are cannabis. But for flower to be classified as hemp, it must contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Anything more, and it’s considered marijuana.

So Can We Sell THCa Online?

Yes! Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. Hemp products are legal to sell as long as they test under that 0.3% THC threshold. And since THCa doesn’t count toward that limit until you heat it, it’s federally compliant.

Yes, it’s a loophole—and it’s a damn good one.

The Experience Is Identical

If you’ve smoked our dispensary pre-rolls, you’ll feel right at home with our THCa collection. Why? Because we’re still using premium, (mostly) California sun-grown flower—meticulously cured, hand-packed, consistently ground, and rolled to perfection.

You’ll get the same smooth pull, the same rich aroma, and yes, the same elevated effects.

This isn’t some lab-concocted imitator. THCa flower is real cannabis. And when it comes from Lowell, you know it’s done right.

Does THCa Feel Different Than THC?

Not at all. Once activated, THCa is chemically identical to THC. That means it hits the same endocannabinoid receptors in your brain and body. It triggers the same euphoria, and delivers the same effects—whether you're looking to unwind, spark creative flow, or share meaningful moments with those closest to you.

The only difference you need to know as a cannabis lover and consumer is that it’s a little more complicated to understand the strength of THCa products. You’re likely used to knowing what percentages of THC feel like.

During the process of decarboxylation (heating up) not all of the THCa compounds convert into THC. Only 87.7% of it converts—an industry standard rate. This means that while THCa products state a higher percentage than you might be accustomed to, the actual percentage of THC is lower.

So Why Not Just Call It THC?

Because the law says we can’t. And while we could rant about tax rates, regulatory red tape, and outdated policy—we’d rather just focus on what we do best: providing world-class pre-rolls that deliver exactly what you’re looking for.

It’s just that now, you can order them online.Woman holding a pack of Lowell Quicks prerolls
